Industrial University Cafe Interior

Updated: Jul 11, 2018

My memories of a Leeds student union cafe in 1994 was a 1970's flat roof building with the interior of a DIY nightclub. Walls splattered with neon posters about up and coming events, offers from the student union shop and adverts for local bands. My time in this memorable place was either spent eating sausage sandwiches with a hangover or inducing the hangover by participating in beer circle games on Wednesday night after hockey matches.

Hard wearing circular tables and floral padded chairs was the kind of furniture the student union of the time deemed suitable. However, three years of watching food and drink being spilt on and soaked into the fabric and foam of these chairs was enough to wonder how they were ever considered a good option for a student bar.

23 years on I had pleasure to visit and photograph the University of Gloucestershire's Pitville Campus cafe. Interior decor and suitable furniture has clearly progressed and improved. I was glad to see no evidence of floral chair covers or neon posters and instead a bright, clean industrial looking interior. Without sounding too 'Kevin McCloud' I really love this style with the exposed vents, ducts, and pipes and the pop of colour from the small yellow stools and bright blue booth seats It made the space really eye catching when you walked in. Large windows at the from of the room flooded the whole space with natural light casting sunlight trails round the walls as it reflected off the silver ducting. OK it was a bit 'Kevin McCloud'!!! Photographing the room from two portrait perspectives took in the ceiling and floor which helped to give a real sense of height as it was one of the defining factors of the cafe.

After taking all the images I needed I enjoyed a jacket potato with cheese and beans plus a bottle of water for a WHOOPING £3.25 which I believe was probably cheaper than my student days. Equally satisfying was the lack of stale beer smell and secondary cigarette smoke which I also endured whilst eating my student lunch back in 1994.

I photographed this location on my Fujifilm XT-2, Fujifilm 10-24mm XF lens. https://amzn.to/2LaoSkW
